Baycross Christian Family Foundation awarded a grant to Harvest House Transitional Centers to provide supportive, transitional housing for unaccompanied youth in Sarasota county.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHarvest House has plans to open an unaccompanied youth (ages 18-24) transitional housing program this year using two of the newly renovated apartments at the Family Village on MLK Jr Way and Tuttle Ave. Unaccompanied homeless youth are young adults experiencing homelessness while not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian. On a national level, it is estimated that 1.6 to 1.7 million youth experience homelessness on their own each year.  These youth live in a variety of unsafe, temporary situations, including cars, parks, the homes of other people, shelters, and motels. Most of these young people have left home due to severe family dysfunction, including abuse and neglect.

Currently, there are 76 unaccompanied youth in Sarasota County that have been identified by the YMCA. These young adults have no family support and no stable, long-term housing solutions available to them.  The Harvest House Unaccompanied Youth program will provide the only supportive transitional housing option in Sarasota for this uniquely vulnerable population in our community.
